Walter Fleer was a World War I veteran who served with the U.S. Army 88th Division, 352nd Infantry, Company K, during World War I according to the patch on his uniform. The 88th used a patch that looked like a 4 leaf clover, but it was a vertical '8' and a horizontal '8' together, giving it the clover leaf resemblance.
